In the 1960’s, Hertz Rent-A-Car ordered a number of Mustang GT’s for their rental lots. This turned out to be a bad business choice for Hertz. When people got word that they could “rent” a Mustang GT for the weekend, there was a large demand for the Black with Yellow Stripes oddity . . .

Here’s where the problems started; the cars were taken to the drag strip then thrashed to the very edge of existence.

More Hertz Mustang GT’s were returned – under the cover of darkness – when the agency had already closed down for the day, due to the damage inflicted on the Mustangs. Blown Engines, Broken Differentials, Damaged Transmissions and worn out rear tires were so commonplace that Hertz eventually removed every single car from service. As a result, these cars have become treasured collector’s items among muscle car enthusiasts!

To coincide with Penske Racing having Hertz as a sponsor on their NASCAR Team, a new version on the Mustang Hertz/Penske GT was introduced to Hertz rental agencies, only with better results than the catastrophe of the 1960’s. Once again, muscle car enthusiasts rejoice.
